Functional Skills English is a nationally recognised qualification that focuses on practical communication skills for everyday life, work, and further study.
The assessments cover three key areas:
- Reading – understanding the main points in short, practical texts such as adverts, leaflets, or timetables.
- Writing – producing clear, purposeful texts such as letters, notes, or emails, with correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Speaking, Listening and Communicating – taking part in discussions or presentations, listening carefully to others, and sharing ideas clearly.
Functional Skills qualifications are available from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. Level 2 is widely recognised by employers, colleges, and training providers as an alternative to GCSE English.

£40 per session (an hour) in person
